The End Approaches

I'm a big believer in seasons... and when the time for tomatoes is past, I believe we should offer thanks for the tomatoes we've had, and forget them until late next summer (OK... great canned tomatoes are a joy 365 days a year... I mean fresh!).

So, as that moment is fast approaching, I wanted to share some pics with you.  These are the seeds my friend Marcia gave me...

and then the odd spindly seedlings...

and then the jungle that they became...

and last but not least, the fruits of our labor...

They may be the oddest tomatoes ever... but boy are they good.  I am not one of those people for whom the adjective "sweet," when applied to a tomato, is an occasion for rejoicing.  I like my tomatoes with deep dark acid-y flavor.  I have never understood the appeal of super sweet... this also applies to corn.  So, as you can probably imagine, these Czech beauties (nicknamed Kiesels in Marcia's honor) are not sweet... but you really know you've eaten a tomato!  Until next year... (for tomatoes... not The Blog!)
