This Old Chef at Age One

As of today, This Old Chef is even older!!!

People frequently ask me why I use the dreaded word "old" in the title of this website...  Well, I'll tell you.

I'm 57... not 27, 37, or even 47.

And though I wish I had all of my hair and less of my waistline, I truly enjoy being older.

I know more, I know I know less...

My friends are fewer but truer...

I have come to embrace my mother's philosophy of not suffering fools gladly, and my father's ability to reassess my initial impressions...

I know what I will no longer waste time on, and what I'm willing to spend hours doing.

The idea of 10-minute/instant/fast food does not excite me...

I've had some money, and been broke... and broke is not fun...

I've had 35 years (so far!) with the love of my life...

I'm willing to try anything, but I no longer worry about the things I KNOW I don't want to do again (fish heads for breakfast in Japan, for example)...

In other words , I think I may finally be growing up.

I love to cook, I love to be onstage speaking the words written by this English guy 500 years ago, I love my friends.

If a recipe asks me to work for hours or even days... that excites me.  Trying to recreate childhood foods excites me.  "Renovating" an old recipe for today excites me.  Teaching someone something... whether it be how to go about making a perfect schnitzel, or how to approach a particularly knotty passage in Shakespeare... excites me.

I love writing for people who will really cook.

So, though not young, I still want to learn something every day.

I am, proudly, THIS OLD CHEF!

I hope this new year is full of adventures, for all of us.

Let's all embrace whatever stage of our lives we're in at the moment!

I saw something on Facebook that made me laugh out loud... so please permit me to share it:

Life doesn't have a remote,

So get up and change it yourself...
